Negros Occidental is universally known as the “Sugar Bowl of the Philippines,” and if you want to see the beating mechanical heart of that industry in the south, you must visit Barangay Talubangi in Kabankalan City.
Situated just north of the Poblacion, Talubangi is an absolute titan of industry. While other barangays are known for their residential quiet or commercial retail, Talubangi is characterized by the sweet, distinct smell of boiling molasses and the towering smokestacks of one of the largest sugar mills in the country.

The Home of SONEDCO
You cannot write about Barangay Talubangi without talking about SONEDCO (Southern Negros Development Corporation), which is now operated by Universal Robina Corporation (URC).
Taking up a massive footprint within the barangay, the SONEDCO sugar mill is the economic anchor not just for Talubangi, but for thousands of sugarcane planters across southern Negros.
- The Milling Season: From roughly October to May, Talubangi transforms into an epicenter of logistical activity. Hundreds of massive ten-wheeler trucks, heavily laden with freshly harvested sugarcane (kampo), line the highway waiting to enter the mill.
- Economic Ripple Effect: The presence of the mill provides thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The barangay is home to mill workers, mechanical engineers, and truck drivers. This has led to a localized economic boom within Talubangi, with boarding houses, hardware suppliers, and eateries thriving off the industrial workforce.
Beyond the Sugar Mill
While sugar is the undisputed king in Talubangi, the barangay is also deeply historical. Before the rise of modern milling, Talubangi was a vital agricultural settlement utilizing the nearby Ilog River for irrigation.
Today, it is a highly progressive barangay. Because of the enormous tax revenue generated by the industrial zone, the local infrastructure here is highly developed. The barangay boasts excellent, wide concrete roads built to withstand heavy industrial trucks, which also greatly benefits the local residents.
Furthermore, Talubangi is home to numerous subdivisions and residential pockets that house the families of the industrial workers. The community celebrates its own local fiestas with massive support from the corporate sector, creating a unique blend of corporate-social partnership.
Barangay Talubangi is the perfect example of Kabankalan’s industrial might. It proves that agriculture and heavy industry can coexist to drive the economy of the Rising City of the South to unprecedented heights.
